The Hunter’s aspirations to service an offshore wind industry have met headwinds, with Equinor’s decision not to proceed with the feasibility licence for the Hunter offshore wind zone.
With capacity for 2GW clean energy to decarbonise the Hunter’s heavy industries, thousands of jobs and $10 billion in capital investment, this giant of a project leaves a huge gap in our region’s plans.
The Committee has worked with Equinor closely over the past couple of years and we know they are committed to our region. We are confident they have done everything they could to make this work.
⭐ In other news, hard to miss the diversification happening right in front of your eyes, with the impressive hulk of the Norwegian-flagged Parsifal berthing at the Port of Newcastle overnight with a cargo of rail wagons and large mining equipment (see image). Literally the size of a small city, it blotted out the sun for keen onlookers, including our CEO, who has switched allegiance from train spotting to ship spotting. One of the world’s largest roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) vessels in the world, it is a harbinger of the diverse cargo we can expect to see the Port servicing over the years to come.
